Tom Ford Vanilla Sex Eye Color Quad in 01 Metallust | Moving quickly past the name of this collection being what no one wants… The real highlight is that Metallust is BACK, so let’s see how it compares!
The quad in this collection comes in the new packaging and formula, which I haven’t yet had the pleasure of trying and look forward to doing this week. To the touch, it does feel luxurious – very soft and silky. The packaging is also stunning – I personally am a big fan of the redesign with the large T motif down the front of the compacts. It’s thoughtfully done, custom, and in a colorway that feels intentionally reflective of the “vanilla” theme.
I’m going to get right into the comparison though because I think this is what most will be interested in.
The original X1 Metallust (vs. this 01 Metallust) has cooler-toned mattes, which I find gives more flexibility in both structuring the eye and providing that nice smoky depth/lining capabilities. In comparison, 01 Metallust leans slightly warmer in the lighter matte and significantly warmer in the deeper one. For me personally, this really means I can only get a warm eye look from this one, where I feel I have more options with the original.
Regarding the shimmers, both formulas are incredibly smooth, with the old quad feeling slightly more textured but not significantly. However, the original contains bigger particles that catch the light more, basically offering increased dimension without the potentially unflattering effect of enhancing texture. This same aspect also allows the original to have an overall cooler reflect because of the larger silver shimmer reflecting back onto the base pigment more. However, if you prefer an overall finer and even finish, you may actually prefer the new one.
Overall, the new quad is both warmer and contains less depth than the original and offers a finer shimmer formula. I’m really glad to have both because as similar as they may be, they give me meaningfully different looks on my extremely fair, muted skin, and I’m able to comfortably try the new formula. For anyone deeper than me, this could be the perfect neutral quad.
We may not have been prepared for the frenzy that was the first release, but hopefully this gives insight into whether this version will fill that hole for you!
